Filled with God’s mercy

“Whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of the little ones in the name of a disciples- truly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward.”
   - Matthew 10: 41

I was in a hurry to get a bike ride in two Sundays ago.  So, I forgot my water bottle on one of those hot, super dry days we had. A few miles in, I was having such a thirst. Funny thing was, there were water stations every half mile along the Lake Monona Loop I was riding because it was the “Milkman’s Triathlon.” It was very difficult for me to bike right by those water stations, loaded with cups of cold water. After passing several, I chanced asking one of the volunteers. Explained that I was not in the triathlon, but had forgotten my water bottle. This particular volunteer smiled, nodded and gave me TWO cups of cold water! “Take as much as you wish!” he said.

You know that feeling. It’s called mercy. When you receive it like I did on that hot, dry Sunday and when you give mercy freely and with enthusiasm, like that volunteer. Mercy makes the world go and Jesus came to share this great truth with us. Acts of mercy embody God’s presence here among us. Jesus talks about the mercy of God contained in a cup of cold water in this weekend’s story. Come join me at worship to be filled up with God’s mercy-receive it and share it!
